Canada Imposes Visa Requirement on Mexican Citizens - Feb 29

Responding to a surge in asylum claims, Canada has reintroduced visa requirements for Mexican citizens effective 11:30 p.m. EST, February 29, 2024. This measure, affecting even those with pre-booked trips or previous electronic travel authorizations (eTAs), aims to manage the high rate of denied, withdrawn, or abandoned asylum applications from Mexico. Mexicans may reapply for an eTA if they've held a Canadian visitor visa in the past ten years or possess a valid U.S. nonimmigrant visa; otherwise, a visa is mandatory. Work and study permit processes remain unchanged, ensuring minimal impact on those with valid permits. This policy revision seeks to balance immigration integrity with the operational strains on Canada's asylum system.
